Providence Diabetes and Nutrition Center

Education and Counseling for Self-Care and Management

The Providence Diabetes and Nutrition Center brings the best in personalized education and support to the community for persons with diabetes (PWDs) and other chronic conditions.

Located on-site at Providence Hospital, the focus of the program is counseling and education for patients and their families, with medical consultation and referrals available upon request.  The American Diabetes Association recognizes the education services of the Providence Diabetes and Nutrition Center as meeting the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education (NSDSME).

The Providence Diabetes and Nutrition Center can help participants self-manage various forms of diabetes and related conditions, including:

  • Prediabetes
  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Gestational diabetes in pregnancy
  • Pre-conception counseling

The Center offers personalized services delivered by specialists in nutrition and diabetes management, including a Registered Dietitian (RD) and a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE). We take a comprehensive approach to care and support designed for each participant’s unique needs, and work to adjust the program as their condition changes.  The Center works closely with your primary care doctor to help you manage your condition, and we are supported by the Providence Endocrinology Department expertise when needed for medication review and medical referrals.

Why seek support at Providence for diabetes and related conditions?

For program participants, there are many benefits to working with a registered dietitian (RD) who has completed comprehensive education and training established by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), and in seeking to empower your health through group education sessions focused on self-management and care.

An RD will work with you one-on-one, helping you set goals and prioritize your health management. Follow-up visits will focus on maintenance and monitoring your progress. One size does not fit all in diabetes management, and we will create a unique plan for your unique needs which provides:

  • Support to manage chronic conditions.
  • Guidance navigating food allergies, sensitivities and intolerances.
  • Personalized weight loss solutions which work.

A CDE is a health professional who possesses comprehensive training, knowledge, and experience in prediabetes, diabetes prevention and management and can provide:

  • Support in helping you manage the multiple effects of diabetes on your life.
  • Training to empower you to take control of your health with self-management techniques.
  • Potential decrease in short and long-term complications from the disease and related conditions.

She recently moved to the area after completing her dietetic internship at an Ascension Hospital in Jacksonville, FL.

Andrea and her team will work to customize a patient care plan which meets your needs in terms of diet, nutrition, and the educational tools you need for self-management.  If you need an endocrinologist or a primary care physician for medication management or medical treatment, the Providence Diabetes and Nutrition Center at Providence Hospital will provide consultation and referrals for those services as well.
