Statement from Providence Health System

Aug 30, 2018
Providence Health System remains committed to our Mission to serve all persons, especially those who are struggling the most, and will continue to have an important presence in the District of Columbia.

Washington, D.C. (August 30, 2018) – Providence Health System remains committed to our Mission to serve all persons, especially those who are struggling the most, and will continue to have an important presence in the District of Columbia. We were founded by the Daughters of Charity, and President Abraham Lincoln signed our original charter. We will continue this legacy as we evolve to meet the changing needs of the community.

To determine how Providence can best contribute to meeting the varied health and wellness needs of the District in a sustainable way, we completed an assessment of the current and future availability of health services in the region and in our own neighborhood. The data show that the supply of hospital beds in the District is more than twice the national average and community need for acute care services is generally met thanks to the many high-quality providers of healthcare services here.

Providence is planning to transition out of providing acute care services by the end of the year and will focus on leading collaborative work to create a model that will keep health at the center, remove obstacles and barriers to a healthy life for all, and better meet the needs of a changing and growing community.

Recognizing the many factors that have led to gaps in services that impact our community’s well-being – including significant income and health disparities, and social determinants of health beyond healthcare – we are evolving to meet the changing needs of the District.

“We know that 15 percent of a person’s life is spent in actual healthcare, which means the remaining 85 percent is spent in other areas that either positively or negatively impact their overall well-being,” said Keith Vander Kolk, Health System President and CEO. “That is where the greatest opportunity to make meaningful change exists, and we must put our focus and energy on advancing a model of transformation that will serve the District in new and lasting ways.”

We continue to collaborate and seek input from internal and external stakeholders, community leaders and partners. We are working closely with the DC Hospital Association and other healthcare institutions to ensure a smooth transition for those we serve.
